Brief notes about the South Luangwa National Park
For most visitors, South Luangwa National Park is by far the most practical park to visit in the valley. This is Zambia’s premier wildlife park, with superb wildlife and many excellent camps. This is where the now famous walking safaris started from over 60 years ago and this unique African destination retains some of the finest world-class safari guides.

There are many contenders for the title of Africa’s best game park. The Serengeti, Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Etosha, Kruger, Moremi and Mana Pools would certainly be high on the list. South Luangwa has a better claim than most. Some of these other areas will match its phenomenally high game densities. Many others – the lesser known of Africa’s parks – will have equally few visitors. One or two also allow night drives, which open up a different, nocturnal world to view, allowing leopards to be commonly seen and even watched whilst hunting.

However, few have South Luangwa’s high quality of guiding together with its remarkable wildlife spectacles, day and night, in the isolation of a true wilderness. These elements, perhaps, are how the contenders ought to be judged, and on these the South Luangwa Park comes out around the top of the list.

You will have the above activities in the company of qualified professional guides from Chichele Presidential Lodge during your safari in the South Luangwa National Park.

Day 1 to Day 5 - Chichele Presidential Lodge, South Luangwa National Park

You will do your unforgettable South Luangwa safari from the comfort of Chichele Presidential Lodge, and spend your 4 nights exploring the game rich surrounding areas of the South Luangwa by open 4-wheel drive safari vehicle as well as walking safaris.

This magnificent historic game lodge is set within lush primeval forest which provides panoramic views across the game-rich valleys of South Luangwa National Park – On a magnificent hilltop location in the South Luangwa National Park. In keeping with the grand colonial style of the lodge, the suites are decorated in the same understated elegance of years gone by. In the ten Victorian-style rooms, the large french windows offer a light, airy feel to the suites and open onto private terraces overlooking the valley – the ideal vantage point to relax and enjoy the wildlife. Air-conditioning, plush furnishings, a four-poster bed, and a luxurious bathroom can make you forget you’re in the bush.

Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge was originally built for Kenneth Kaunda, the former Zambian president, in the 1970s. This historic property was recently carefully restored to maintain the original colonial style. A majestic arched entrance leads you into a huge colonial-style lounge and outside the grand dining room; a long veranda stretches with views down the valley to the Luangwa River. The main area features a comfortable lounge, swimming pool, intimate fireplace and bar area.

Day 5 - Flight from Mfuwe Airport to Royal Airstrip in Lower Zambezi

At some stage around mid morning on this day, you will be on a transfer to Mfuwe Airport to catch a direct domestic flight to Royal Airstrip.

On arrival at Royal Airstrip, a guide from Chongwe River Camp will welcome you and transfer you to the Lodge where you will be staying during your 3 nights stay in the Lower Zambezi.

Day 5 to Day 8 - Chongwe River Camp, Lower Zambezi

Set on the western bank of the Chongwe River, which acts as the boundary to the National park. Chongwe River Camp is a wonderful lodge. Its location on the smaller tributary just a few hundred meters up from the confluence with the main Zambezi River adds to its attraction. We feel the location also adds a certain amount of intimacy to the camp to be able to see the other side of the Chongwe which at this point is probably just 50mts across as opposed to being on the main course of the Zambezi River which is really a very large and on occasions quite daunting river.

There are 8 standard tents spread along the bank of the river, which are modest when compared with some other tented camps but comfortable none the less with outside bathrooms behind. There are also two suites at Chongwe, the Albida suite with 2 rooms and the Acacia Suite with just 1 room, which are priced a little more that the standard tents but they really are quite stunning suites on a par with anything you will find throughout Zambia.

You will enjoy a variety of activities during your time at Chongwe River Camp such as game drives, walking, canoeing, boating and angling in the company of Africa’s finest guides.
